The Life They Lead ...

In 1958, Firefighter A. W. “Smokey” Linn of the Wichita, Kansas Fire Department responded to a call from dispatch, and arrived to find three young children trapped behind security bars in the fire.

Despite their efforts, those three children were not reached in time, and they died on that fateful night, leaving the firemen to deal with the torrent of emotions that rushed over them.

Firefighter Smokey Linn had young children of his own at home, and was left with an immense feeling of pain and loss. In his attempt to handle his grief, he wrote the following poem, calling out to God to ease his tortured emotions:

The Fireman’s Prayer

When I am called to duty, God
whenever flames may rage,
Give me the strength to save some life
Whatever be its age.

Help me to embrace a little child
Before it’s too late,
Or some older person
from the horror of that fate.

Enable me to be alert
And hear the weakest shout,
And quickly and efficiently
to put the fire out.

I want to fill my calling
and give the best in me,
To guard my neighbor
And protect his property.

And if according to Your will
I have to lose my life,
Please bless with Your protecting hand
My children and my wife
