Event Owes Success to Many

Dear Editor:

Last Saturday, May 2, Nandua High School and Chincoteague Community Center were sites for two Point of Distribution (POD) exercises. Approximately 800 citizens received supplies that might typically be distributed after a major disaster strikes the county. In addition to participating citizens, the following local entities helped make this state evaluated exercise a success:

Eastern Shore CERT, Eastern Shore Medical Reserve Corps, ESHARC, Eastern Shore Health Department, Shore Memorial Hospital, Virginia Department of Transportation, State Police, Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, Virginia Cooperative Extension, Eastern Shore Rural Health, Union Baptist Church Disaster Relief Team, Parksley Volunteer Fire Co., Melfa Volunteer Fire & Rescue Co., and Accomack County departments – Emergency Management, Public Safety, Sheriff’s office, Public Works, Parks & Recreation, Schools — and Town of Chincoteague departments — Emergency Management, EMS, Police, Public Works. Many thanks go out to this coalition of national, state, local, and volunteer groups that are working together to make Accomack County better prepared for any disasters that may come its way.

PARKSLEY, Va. - Starting to pick up the pieces. An Eastern Shore family is rebuilding after a Christmas morning fire. The fire happened on Village Place Lane in Parksley. It destroyed the home and everything inside.

The Bailey family tries to make every Christmas special. The fun all begins on the night before.

"The kids and I had been up pretty late," said Camisha Bailey. "We had fixed rice crispy treats and cookies. We were just having a good time."

"We had to tell them (the kids) just wait, Christmas is almost here," said Norman Bailey. "Then to see everything happen and you're not able to give them the gifts you purchased for them, it becomes a little disappointing."

Just one walk up the Bailey's steps and you'll see that disappointment. The family was asleep inside their Parksley home, only hours away from opening the gifts. That's when Norman Bailey woke up to an unfamiliar smell.

"When I opened the bedroom door I saw a lot of smoke," said Bailey.

He rushed into the kitchen and tried to put out the flames. Unable to do so, he directed his efforts into getting his wife and five children out.

"My husband woke me up and said 'Camisha, Camisha, the house is one fire,'" said Camisha Bailey. "Basically it was like a dream."

That dream becoming a nightmare. Everyone got out safely, but they could only watch in horror.

"It just seemed like the house went up into flames immediately and I just completely lost it," said Bailey. "I couldn't do anything, but just cry."

The family lost everything. Inside the burned shell, charred remains of life they've built together. It was all reduced to ash.

Home is now the inside of a hotel room. The Bailey's say they look forward to rebuilding their lives. They tell us in the end they learned the true meaning of Christmas and for that the holiday ended up being once again pretty special.

"It made you realize that it's not about presents," said Bailey. "It's really about family."

The Parksley Volunteer Fire Department his trying to help the family rebuild by taking donations. If you want to help out you can call Parksley Fire Company President Freddie Matthews at 757-710-4398 or Vice President Wayne Marshall at 757-710-9274.
